While San Diego is a conservative-leaning city politically, many areas have embraced the LGTBQ+ community. Most establishments are LGTBQ+ friendly and the city’s renowned Hillcrest neighborhood is a place where you’ll see couples holding hands and kissing on the street.
The State of California has many laws that protect and advance the rights of LGTBQ+ communities. Many areas are welcoming, and California has some of the largest Pride festivals in the country. Please be aware that in rural and more conservative areas of California, behaviors may range from subtle micro-aggressions to open hostility and violence against community members.
Depending on the state, the United States has varying degrees of LGBTQ+ rights. Laws vary from outright bans against communities to protections against discrimination. Please be aware that bans against the Transgender community as a whole have increased significantly, making it one of the most vulnerable parts of the community.
