Most neighborhoods are situated around the gayborhood - Hillcrest.

General tips + hints
  • Book your hotel in advance, as there are only a couple of hotels in Hillcrest. But, there are plenty of options in the surrounding areas.
  • Most of Hillcrest is walkable, with numerous bars and restaurants on or next to University Avenue.
  • There are buses to the area as well as the Trolly, but the Trolly does not take you to Hillcrest. Your best bet is to use ride-share options throughout the city.

The diverse mix of architecture and beautiful Trolley Barn Park offers gorgeous scenery while you explore. Stop by one of the local breweries or the endless restaurants, to explore everything from Mexican to specialty pot pies. You’ll find friendly faces, and the vibes are immaculate.

Downtown

Lively, Trendy, Artsy, Touristy, Fit for Foodies

Downtown San Diego is bursting with activities, whether you’re looking for a night filled with drama at the grand Civic Theatre or some inspired dishes served up at one of Little Italy’s trattorias.  If you prefer to flex those dancing muscles, the historic Gaslamp Quarter offers bars and clubs aplenty.  The Maritime Museum, Seaport Village, and the Star of India also offer a bit more touristy experience.  One thing’s for certain, whether you are in one of Downtown’s gleaming skyscrapers or one of its beautiful historic Spanish-influenced buildings, your view will be spectacular.

ADVISORY - BE VIGILANT IN THESE AREAS

East Village

San Diego's largest neighborhood, home to Petco Park and high-rise apartments; both violent crime and total crime are above the national averages. So be careful when you’re out in this neighborhood.

Tijuana + Mexican Border

Going to some of the venues or events across the border to Tijuana (TJ) or even some of the other towns further down the coast can be a lot of fun. Remember you are in another country and your rights differ. Police can often be hard to deal with and will sometimes try to get money from you.
